Rock and Roll Poetry – Patti Smith “Just Kids”

More about keeping the creative juices flowing and staying creatively nourished…books, galleries, walks with no direction, music….help keep the channel open.  Here is a brief reflection:

I just finished reading Just Kids by Patti Smith.

Through my eyes I have just ingested this beautiful story. It is now woven into my heart and consciousness with Patti’s gypsy ribbons.  I am so grateful to have met her this way.

When I bought it I felt as though I was holding something sacred in my hands. Now I understand why I was overcome when I saw it on the shelf.  She instinctively beckoned me and I am glad I listened and responded. I know I will go back to it and read it again. It is her memoir but hers and Robert’s story.  A poetic story telling of their first years in New York City through the 1960s and 70s…from Brooklyn to the Chelsea Hotel to flats and studios in the city. Patti and Robert: artists, lovers and friends following the blue star to the garden of feathers.  For me this wasn’t just a memoir it was a song of poetry, a song of friendship, love and rock and roll.  It was a story of success, of deep caring, of following truth and expression…a story of  two Creatives unleashed, honest and free.

Day at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Being less busy and having less direction: a recipe for inspiration and creativity! It is March Break and my brain channels aren’t so congested and I can receive more. It is important to re-fill my well of creative juices, just take in and create.

Firstly, I am thankful we survived my driving in downtown Detroit! Here is a little poem I wrote. I hope you like it!

What I saw and felt at the DIA…

Innards all exposed, crashing waves, and a wheel held captive.

Dark black outlines hug tomatoes, a green bowl, and lilies that look like hands.

I drop my pencil in front of the dancer with a triangular head, while the perky sculpture asks me to go for a picnic.

Giacometti reaching.

Matisse just finishing his toast, then going into his salon to paint.

Matisse-Most -Modern.

Matisse-Marvelous.

Matisse-Mania.

Matisse-Master-Mastisse!

Picasso. He is in every one.

Every one, of his paintings: in the hands in that one, and there, in the shape of the head,

And, in that one – the shadow, you see, he is there in the anxiety in her face. He loved  her.

And the pink background in that painting, he wants to grab you by the collar of your shirt and pull you in and closer.

Picasso will get in you and rip you apart.

Van Gogh, he was two, he had life and death in him. So, to… become every thing.

This is who he was, this is how he lived.

He breathed this into all.

And this is how he painted.

If you have a chance – go the the DIA.

A must see, and what leaves me speechless, no
matter how many times I have been there, is Mexican painter, Diego Riviera’s
Mural in the main entrance. Go, have fun, be open, feel the love  translated in colour and line and texture…. and be nourished! http://www.dia.org/
